Why screens are measured in inches worldwide
Nearly every country on Earth measures television, monitor, laptop, and phone screens in inches, even fully metric nations like Germany, Japan, and France. This traces back to the early decades of the television industry, dominated by American and Japanese manufacturers who standardized on inches for their cathode-ray tube displays in the mid-20th century, and the convention simply never changed even as flat-panel and mobile displays became standard worldwide.
Because the convention is so deeply entrenched globally, converting screen sizes to centimeters is rarely necessary for shopping purposes — retailers everywhere list inches regardless of the country’s usual measurement system — but understanding what an inch measurement actually represents on a screen helps you judge size accurately before buying.
What "inches" actually measures on a screen
Screen size in inches always refers to the diagonal measurement, corner to corner across the visible display area — not the width, not the height, and not the physical bezel or overall device dimensions. A “55-inch TV” has a diagonal viewing area of 55 inches (about 140 cm), but its actual width and height depend on the aspect ratio, typically 16:9 for modern TVs and monitors.
For a 16:9 aspect ratio screen, you can estimate width and height from the diagonal using the Pythagorean relationship: width ≈ diagonal × 0.872, height ≈ diagonal × 0.490. A 55-inch 16:9 TV is therefore about 48 inches (122 cm) wide and 27 inches (69 cm) tall, not counting any bezel.
Converting common screen sizes to centimeters
- Phone screens (5.5–6.9 in diagonal) ≈ 14–17.5 cm — most modern smartphones fall in this range
- Tablet screens (10–13 in diagonal) ≈ 25–33 cm
- Laptop screens (13–17 in diagonal) ≈ 33–43 cm
- Monitor screens (24–34 in diagonal) ≈ 61–86 cm
- TV screens (43–75 in diagonal) ≈ 109–190 cm — the size range most commonly sold for living rooms today
Aspect ratio changes what the same diagonal looks like
Two screens with an identical diagonal measurement can look noticeably different in shape if their aspect ratios differ. Older TVs and monitors used a 4:3 ratio, nearly square, while modern displays use 16:9 (widescreen) or, for some ultrawide monitors, 21:9 — meaning a 27-inch 16:9 monitor and a hypothetical 27-inch 4:3 monitor would have the same diagonal but very different width and height, with the 4:3 version being noticeably shorter and wider relative to its height.
This matters most when comparing an older device to a newer one by diagonal size alone, or when shopping for ultrawide monitors, which often advertise a diagonal-inch figure that sounds comparable to a standard monitor but actually delivers a much wider, shorter viewing area for the same nominal size.
Judging screen size before you buy
Diagonal inches alone do not tell you whether a TV will physically fit your media console or a monitor will fit your desk — always check the manufacturer’s listed width and height (or depth for stands) separately, since bezels, stands, and speaker housings add to the overall footprint beyond just the screen’s viewing area.
For TVs specifically, a commonly cited (though rough) viewing-distance guideline is that the screen’s diagonal in inches should be roughly one-half to one-third of your seating distance in inches for a comfortable, immersive experience at typical 4K resolution — a 65-inch TV suits a seating distance of roughly 6.5 to 10 feet, for example. This is a general guideline, not a strict rule, and personal preference and room layout matter too.
Why manufacturers rarely bother listing centimeters
Because inch-based screen sizing is a globally understood convention rather than a country-specific measurement choice, manufacturers selling identical products worldwide simply keep the inch figure on every market’s packaging rather than localizing it — unlike, say, a recipe or a road sign, where the unit genuinely changes by country. If you want the centimeter equivalent for measuring physical space, such as a media cabinet or a car dashboard mount, converting the advertised inch figure is usually necessary since it will not appear on the box.
A quick way to convert: multiply the inch figure by 2.54 to get centimeters. A 24-inch monitor is 24 × 2.54 = 61 cm diagonal; that translates to roughly 53 cm wide by 30 cm tall for a standard 16:9 panel, which is the number worth measuring against your actual desk space before ordering.
Resolution is a separate number from screen size
Screen size in inches tells you nothing about resolution — the number of pixels packed into that diagonal measurement — which is why two 27-inch monitors can look dramatically different in sharpness if one is 1080p (1920×1080 pixels) and the other is 4K (3840×2160 pixels), with four times as many total pixels in the same physical inch measurement. Pixel density, usually expressed in pixels per inch (PPI), combines both numbers and is a better predictor of how sharp text and images will look than screen size alone.
A useful rule of thumb: for typical desk-distance viewing, 4K resolution starts to show a clearly sharper image than 1080p once the screen exceeds about 27 inches, while on a smaller laptop or phone screen viewed up close, even 1080p or a mid-range resolution can look sharp because the pixels are packed more tightly into a smaller physical area.
Measuring your own space before buying
Before ordering a new TV or monitor based on its inch rating alone, measure the actual physical space it needs to occupy — the width of your media console, the depth of your desk, the clearance around a wall mount — using a tape measure, and compare those numbers against the manufacturer’s listed dimensions (not just the diagonal screen size) before finalizing a purchase, since two products with the same diagonal inches can have different real-world footprints due to bezel width, stand design, and speaker housings.
