Nautical Miles and Knots: A Traveler’s Guide
Nautical miles and knots power ships and aircraft worldwide, even in metric countries. Learn where they come from, how to convert them, and why they matter for boat charters, flights, and marine forecasts.

Why the sea and sky use their own mile
A nautical mile equals exactly 1,852 meters — noticeably longer than a statute (land) mile’s 1,609.344 meters. It was defined based on the Earth’s geometry: one nautical mile corresponds to one minute of arc of latitude along a great circle, which made it enormously practical for centuries of ship navigation using a sextant, a chronometer, and paper charts marked in degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude.
This geographic basis is why the nautical mile survived the switch to metric in country after country, and why it remains the international standard for maritime and aviation distance today regardless of whether the country otherwise uses miles or kilometers on land — the unit is tied to how you actually navigate using latitude, not to any particular country’s domestic measurement preference.
The knot: speed built from the nautical mile
A knot is simply one nautical mile per hour, so a ship or aircraft traveling at 20 knots covers 20 nautical miles in one hour, equal to about 23 mph or 37 km/h. The term “knot” itself comes from an old measurement technique: sailors would throw a rope with evenly spaced knots tied along its length overboard and count how many knots passed through their hands in a fixed time, giving a rough but workable speed estimate long before modern instruments existed.
Because the definition already includes “per hour,” it is technically redundant, and considered incorrect by careful writers, to say “knots per hour” — a ship travels “at 20 knots,” not “20 knots per hour,” the same way a car travels “at 60 mph,” not “60 mph per hour.”
Where you will encounter nautical miles and knots
- Marine weather forecasts — wind speed is reported in knots almost everywhere in the world, including fully metric countries
- Aviation — aircraft speed (airspeed) and wind reports use knots internationally; altitude is separately reported in feet almost everywhere
- Boat and yacht charters — rental and charter companies quote cruising speed in knots and trip distances in nautical miles
- GPS chartplotters on boats — marine navigation devices default to nautical miles and knots rather than the country’s land-based unit convention
- Coast Guard and search-and-rescue reports — distances and speeds in official maritime incident reports use nautical miles and knots
Converting between nautical miles, statute miles, and kilometers
1 nautical mile = 1.852 km = 1.15078 statute miles. Worked example: a coastal sailing trip of 45 nautical miles equals 45 × 1.852 = 83.34 km, or 45 × 1.15078 = 51.8 statute miles — a meaningfully larger number in statute miles than the nautical mile figure might suggest at first glance, since the nautical mile is the longer of the two.
For speed, 1 knot = 1.852 km/h = 1.15078 mph. A small motorboat cruising at 15 knots is moving at about 27.8 km/h or 17.3 mph, worth converting mentally if you are used to thinking in road-speed terms and are trying to judge how fast a boat trip will feel, since 15 of any land-speed unit sounds much slower than 15 knots actually is once converted.
Why this matters for travelers, not just sailors
If you book a ferry crossing, a whale-watching tour, a small-plane sightseeing flight, or a yacht charter on vacation, the trip’s speed and distance will likely be quoted in knots and nautical miles in the booking materials, even in a country where you would otherwise expect kilometers or miles. Estimating trip duration from a speed you do not intuitively understand can lead to poor planning — a “25-nautical-mile crossing at 12 knots” takes about 2 hours and 5 minutes (25 ÷ 12), a calculation worth doing before you commit to a tight connecting schedule on the other side.
Weather apps and marine forecasts reporting “15–20 knot winds” for a planned day of sailing or paddleboarding are describing a meaningfully brisk wind — roughly 17–23 mph or 28–37 km/h — that inexperienced small-craft users should take seriously. Converting to a wind speed unit you already have an intuitive feel for, mph or km/h, whichever you are used to for judging outdoor conditions, can help you decide whether conditions are appropriate for your experience level.
Quick reference for common speeds

Depth is also measured differently at sea
Nautical charts traditionally showed water depth in fathoms (1 fathom = 6 feet = 1.8288 meters) rather than feet or meters directly, a unit dating back to the same era of rope-and-knot navigation as the knot itself — a sailor could estimate depth by feeding out a weighted rope marked at fathom intervals and counting how many passed overboard before the weight touched bottom. Modern charts increasingly show depth in meters or feet directly, but fathoms still appear on some older or specialized nautical publications, particularly in the US and UK.
If you are chartering a boat or reading an older nautical chart and see a depth figure that seems unusually small for open water, check whether it is quoted in fathoms rather than meters or feet before assuming the water is dangerously shallow — a charted depth of “10” could mean 10 fathoms (about 18 meters), a meaningful difference from 10 meters for planning anchoring or diving.
