Speed limits mean different things in different countries. Learn how mph and km/h relate, memorize key reference points, and avoid dangerous mistakes when driving a rental car abroad.

Why speed units differ by country
Almost every country in the world measures road speed in kilometers per hour (km/h). The three notable holdouts are the United States, the United Kingdom, and Myanmar, all of which post speed limits in miles per hour (mph) — a legacy of imperial units that never fully converted, even after the UK metricated most other everyday measurements decades ago.
This becomes a real, practical concern the moment you rent a car in a country that uses a different unit than the one your instincts are trained on. A driver used to mph who misreads a 100 km/h motorway limit as “100” in their home units would feel like they were meant to drive at 100 mph — dangerously fast — instead of the correctly converted 62 mph equivalent.
The core conversion
The exact relationship is 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers, so 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h and 1 km/h = 0.621371 mph. For quick mental math while planning your trip — never do precise math behind the wheel; memorize these reference points before you leave home instead — a rough shortcut is to multiply km/h by 0.6 to estimate mph, or multiply mph by 1.6 to estimate km/h.

Rental car dashboards and GPS mismatches
Most rental cars display speed in the unit standard to the country they are registered in, but GPS apps on your own phone may default to whatever unit your phone’s regional settings use, creating a situation where your dashboard says one number and your navigation app says a different one for the exact same speed. Before driving off the rental lot, check both displays agree, or explicitly set your navigation app’s unit preference to match the dashboard so you are never doing mental conversion while actually driving.
Some newer rental cars, especially in Europe, offer a settings menu to switch the speedometer’s secondary unit display or add a digital readout in the other unit — worth spending two minutes finding before you leave the parking lot rather than guessing at highway speed.
Speed cameras and enforcement tolerances
Speed limits are enforced strictly in most of Europe, often with automated cameras that have little to no informal tolerance above the posted limit, unlike some US states where officers may informally allow a few mph over before ticketing. Do not assume the driving culture you are used to at home about how much “cushion” exists above a posted limit; when in doubt, treat the posted number as a hard ceiling, not a suggestion.
Countries also vary widely in how limits change by road type and weather. France, for example, lowers its default highway limit from 130 km/h to 110 km/h in wet conditions — a rule visitors frequently do not know about until they see it posted on an electronic sign, since it is not fixed on a static sign the way base limits are.
Beyond mph and km/h: knots for boats and planes
If your trip involves a boat charter, small aircraft, or reading a marine weather forecast, you will encounter a third speed unit: the knot, equal to one nautical mile (1.852 km) per hour. One knot is about 1.15 mph or 1.85 km/h — noticeably faster than either land-based unit implies for the same number, since a nautical mile is longer than either a statute mile or a kilometer alone.
Wind speed in marine and aviation forecasts is almost always given in knots worldwide, regardless of whether the country otherwise uses metric or imperial units — a 20-knot wind, about 23 mph or 37 km/h, is a moderate breeze that experienced sailors take seriously for small craft, but casual travelers reading the forecast in an unfamiliar unit might underestimate it.
A pre-trip checklist for driving abroad
- Look up your destination’s speed unit (km/h almost everywhere outside the US, UK, and a few other countries) before you land.
- Memorize 3–4 common limit conversions in the unit you already think in, using the table above as a starting point.
- Set your phone’s navigation app to match the dashboard’s unit so you never need to convert mentally while driving.
- Check for special reduced limits in rain, fog, or near schools — many countries lower limits automatically in these conditions.
- Confirm whether the country enforces limits strictly with cameras (most of Europe) or allows informal tolerance (varies by US state) before assuming any margin above the posted number.
Distance and fuel gauges add to the mental load
It is not just speed that changes units when you cross a border — trip odometers, fuel gauges, and navigation distance estimates all switch too, and a driver managing several unfamiliar units at once is more likely to misjudge how far a fuel stop can safely wait. Before a long drive in an unfamiliar country, note your rental car’s fuel tank range in the local distance unit, and build in a buffer rather than converting on the fly while low on fuel in an unfamiliar area.
GPS-based navigation apps generally handle this well by displaying distance-to-empty and remaining trip distance in the same unit consistently, but older rental cars with only a manual fuel gauge and no digital range estimate leave more of this mental conversion work to the driver — worth checking which type of car you have booked before a remote or rural itinerary.
