About speed conversions

Speed units combine a distance unit and a time unit, so getting a speed conversion wrong usually means one of those two components was mixed up: kilometers per hour (km/h) is the road-speed standard in most of the world, miles per hour (mph) is standard in the United States and the United Kingdom (despite the UK using km/h-adjacent metric units elsewhere), knots are the standard for aviation and maritime navigation worldwide regardless of country, and meters per second (m/s) is the SI-consistent unit used in physics, engineering, and scientific measurement.

This matters most immediately when driving in an unfamiliar country: a rental car's speedometer, the posted speed limits, and your own mental sense of "how fast is fast" all need to agree. Renting a car in Europe after driving mainly in the US means recalibrating instinct — 100 km/h is about 62 mph, not 100 mph, and misreading a speed limit sign by treating the number as if it were in your home unit is a genuinely common and entirely avoidable mistake for travelers.

Scientific and engineering contexts default to meters per second because it keeps speed dimensionally consistent with other SI base units used in the same calculation (distance in meters, time in seconds) — useful when speed feeds into a further calculation like kinetic energy or momentum, where mixing km/h into a physics formula without converting first is a fast way to get an answer off by a factor of 3.6.
